What does it take for Allergy Diagnosis?

So you think you have an allergy and you want to find out for sure. This suspicion that you have an allergy is the first step toward allergy diagnosis. You will want to go to your doctor and relay the allergy symptoms you have been experiencing that have lead you to believe you have an allergy. You should express any concerns you have about allergy symptoms or symptom diagnosis and any allergy blood test you may require.

There are a plethora of over-the-counter allergy treatments on the shelves these days to deal with relief from allergy, but you will want to check with your doctor first. You never know what side effects these allergy treatments might cause or if you are on a medication that will interact with  over-the-counter allergy products.

Before you get to the possibility of allergy treatments, you will have to detail your symptoms. You will have to know what the suspected allergen is, in what circumstances do they occur, how long you have been experiencing the allergy symptoms, and possibly even if you have any history of allergy reports in your family. The more information you can give, the better your doctor will be able to work toward an allergy diagnosis and allergy relief.

The actual testing for allergies can be done using either a skin text or a allergy blood test. In skin testing, the skin is scratched and comes into contact with the suspected allergen so that your doctor can watch for any allergic reaction. For the blood test, blood is drawn and then tested for allergies. You should know that it is possible to come up with a false positive diagnosis.

You will always want to get potential allergies tested so that you can be aware of what is causing your symptoms. You also want to know what to do in the case that your allergy is severe.

Taking the First Steps Towards Allergy Diagnosis

By Now you may suspect that you, a family member or a friend has an allergy symptom. You should consult with your physician or an allergist/immunologist, a physician specially trained in this area to get a tests diagnosis. Many over the counter allergy products are available and they are not without side effects, particularly if you are using them for long term use for treatment of allergy. You must find out what exactly your diagnosis of suspected allergens are so the most effective but least potent allergy remedy can be used for relief from allergy. Self prescribing is a dangerous practise and should be avoided, particularly if you take more than one allergy product, as interactions are possible. Just because you can buy allergy solutions without a prescription doesn't mean they are harmless. When the time comes to choose an allergy specialist, speak to your general physician for a referral, as well as friends and family members who may be able to suggest an allergy doctor. It helps to arm yourself with information before your consultation, such as keeping a diary of symptoms to give the allergist as much information as possible. A good idea is to write down any questions you may have and bring the list with you. Also, so you don't have to remember everything that was discussed, take notes during your visit.

The allergist will ask you for a full history and will ask questions such as: What are your suspected allergens? How long have you had them? Are you taking any medication now? What other medications do you take other than allergy medication?. If food allergies are suspected, the allergist may recommend a food allergy blood test first. If the food allergy tests results have confirmed you do have a food allergy, there are several courses of action available for food allergy treatment. An elimination diet, where certain foods that are suspect are eliminated from your diet for a period of time, maybe a few weeks. These foods are then reintroduced one at a time and you will need to pay close attention to any food allergy symptoms you may experience during this reintroduction period. Any offending foods can then be withdrawn again, to see if the symptoms clear up. You may want to experiment with some of the food allergy recipes that are available from local health food stores. Patience is needed during this testing as it can be a long process, but the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience.
