How do Allergy Treatments work?

Allergy treatment begins with prevention. If you can avoid an allergen in the first place then there will not be any allergy symptoms so contend with. This route will take some extra effort on your part but is the simplest solution. Of course, you will want to tailor your avoidance to your allergy. Avoiding pets may not do you much good if you are allergic to mold. You should always talk to your doctor about your symptoms and their severity to make sure that you are doing all that you should do. The severity of your symptoms will be a major factor.

Regular vacuuming and carpet cleaning is a must. Carpets can hold on to allergens such as dust mites and contribute to symptoms. The best option would be wood or vinyl floors, but if this is not an option, then cleanliness is the next best thing. There are many such steps that can be taken to cut down on suspected allergens around the home. Once again, you will have to find where your allergen resides and figure out how to best deal with it.

If pet dander is the allergen causing your symptoms then regular baths for your pet will cut down on the amount of that allergen in your home. Even cats can become acclimated to baths in time. You can ask your veterinarian about how to best go about this.

What is The Right Allergy Treatment for you

Allergy treatment begins at home. There is no real cure for allergies. Control is the best defense and avoidance is the first step, although it is not always possible. Pollen and dust are in the air everywhere, so how do we avoid them and still live a reasonably normal life? With treatments we aim to achieve a certain balance. Treat the symptoms with the most effective yet least potent allergy remedy and avoid or minimize contact with the offending allergens. Immunotherapy can make a big difference for some people in their body's sensitivity to a specific allergen.

Immunotherapy: Some people who suffer with allergy asthma can't control symptoms using medication or by avoiding triggers. Immunotherapy (allergy shots ) for them may be their only hope in getting relief and may even help prevent development of inflammation of airways and the resulting chronic airway sensitivity. Allergen immunology acts like a vaccination. Small amounts of a specific allergen are injected into your body. The dose is gradually increased and your body builds up an immunity to the allergen that triggered the allergic reaction in the first place. If you come in contact with these allergens in the future you should have a very minor allergic response and hopefully fewer symptoms.

People who have allergies to pollen, mold, insect stings, dust mites and cat dander are the ones that immunotherapy will work best for. It is possible during treatment for some side effects to occur. They may include swelling where they had the injection and a more serious reaction in some cases causing asthma or an anaphylactic reaction. Your allergy doctor will be able to give you the best advice on the course of allergy treatment required.

Medication:

Antihistamines and decongestants are the two main allergy medication types. Histamines are a substance released when mast cells recognize the presence of an allergen. Antihistamines block the action of the histamines and also relieve inflammation, itchiness, watery eyes and redness. Many older types of antihistamines can make you sleepy, they have a sedating effect. Most newer ones are non sedating and are available by prescription. The job of a Decongestant is to reduce nasal congestion by constricting blood vessels in the nose. Although they work faster than oral decongestants, it is not advisable to take them for any more than a few days. They have what is called a rebound effect where the congestion that was cleared comes back and taking more only makes the situation worse.  Bronchodilators work by relaxing the muscles around the air tubes in the lungs. Allergy symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing can be decreased. Common side effects are nervousness and agitation. Steroid medications in oral or inhaled nasal forms are used to decrease inflammation. The nasal steroids tend to have fewer side effects than the oral ones. A Doctor must carefully monitor the long term oral use ( usually more than one week ) as it has potential systemic side effects. For an allergy rash a low dose topical steroid medication can be used.
